ENGLISH PROFICIENCY
REQUIREMENT
An AZ hold will be placed on your student account if
you have not yet met our English proficiency requirements. For more information on this requirement and on how to get an AZ hold cleared, visit z.umn.edu/englishreq.
There are a few options to have the AZ hold cleared:
• Enroll in the required English language course during your first semester in addition to your other academic courses. Beginning in May, an advisor from the Minnesota English Language Program (MELP) will reach out to you with more information on which course to register for. You will then register for the course when you register for the other courses in your major during orientation.
• Take an English proficiency test administered by the University’s Minnesota English Language Program upon arrival to campus. If you feel your English has improved since your last exam, you have the option of taking the Minnesota Battery Test when you arrive on campus. There is a $45 fee for the test. Depending on your test results, you may still be required to take an English language course during your first semester in your degree program, in addition to courses in your major. Beginning in May, MELP advisors will reach out to you to schedule an appointment.
• Submit a more recent English proficiency test score if you have one that meets the University of Minnesota standard, you can submit the official test score to the Office of Admissions. Both total score and writing subscore must meet or exceed the minimum required scores. Submit your new official test score before participating in orientation. Information on English proficiency tests and minimum required scores is available at z.umn.edu/EnglishReq
COLLEGE COURSEWORK
If you completed any college coursework while in high school, before enrolling at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, arrange to have an official final transcript sent directly to the Office of Admissions from each college you attended. A transfer credit evaluation will be produced and emailed to you.
• If these courses were completed at a University of Minnesota campus, you do not need to send your transcript.
• If courses were taken at an institution outside the United States, please visit z.umn.edu/International TransferCredit.
PLACEMENT AND PROFICIENCY TESTS
After you confirm your enrollment, your college of admission will contact you, beginning in April, about placement and/or proficiency tests. These tests are administered online through your “New Student Checklist.”
AP, IB, GCE AND A-LEVEL
University credit is awarded for qualifying scores on Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), GCE A-Level exams and College in the Schools. For information on these tests, visit:
