 ENGLISH PROFICIENCY
REQUIREMENT
An AZ hold will be placed on your student account if you have not yet met our English proficiency requirements. For more information on this requirement and on how to get an AZ hold cleared, visit z.umn.edu/englishreq.
There are a few options to have the AZ hold cleared:
• Enroll in one or two English language courses in
your major area of study during your first year, in addition to academic courses. At orientation, your academic advisor will assist you with selecting English language courses.
• Take an English proficiency test administered by the University’s Minnesota English Language Program (MELP) upon arrival to campus. Depending on your results, you may be required to take one or two English language courses in your major area of study during your first
year, in addition to academic courses. Contact MELP
at esl@umn.edu for more information.
• Take another English proficiency test and submit an
official score report. Both the total score and writing subscore must meet or exceed the minimum required scores.
• If you have completed 26 or more transferable semester credits at a U.S. institution AND the equivalent of a University of Minnesota Twin Cities first-year English writing course requirement, OR have completed 60 or more transferable semester credits, please submit your official transcript to the Office of Admissions.
