Message from the Department Head
Hello Alumni and Friends,
It has been a busy summer and fall, as
I started my term as department head. I
have been learning and strategizing and getting to know the ins and outs of all that goes on here—and there is a lot going on.
I am very optimistic about the department and where we are going. We have a great faculty, committed staff, and a student body that is full of potential. CEGE researchers and students are working on some of the most important issues for our society and our planet. Two recent large research grants highlight this role.
Our geomechanics group is leading a new Department of Energy (DOE)-funded Energy Frontier Research Center focused on advancing CO2 sequestration through an improved fundamental understanding of the process. You can read about this project on page 8. I am pleased to be part of a new National Science Foundation-funded endeavor to train science, policy, and engineering graduate students to think about circularity for better resource recovery, conservation, and stewardship (page 10).
You will also read about a student in our Master’s Sustainable Development Program, Phoebe Edalatpour, who has initiated an innovative project that addresses plastic recycling and creates a business that can sustain women in rural areas of Sierra Leone.
We also celebrate with alumna Jane Lansing, who received a University-wide service award (page 20). We are so grateful for her service and so proud of this award. The Minnesota Water Research Fund is making progress, and our news section is packed with tidbits about our department and our alumni.
I am happy to be on this journey with all of you!
Best regards,
Paige Novak
