Managing and treating urban runoff
Urban runoff can be managed and treated through the use of rain gardens, infiltration basins, and swales. These systems are often placed near roads and parking lots to retain and infiltrate runoff coming from impervious surfaces. The goal is to help return the watershed hydrology toward a pre-development condition. CEGE faculty and students have advanced the management of urban runoff and have developed three technologies currently used to treat pollution from urban runoff: the SAFL Baffle keeps sediment from washing out of a sump, the MPD Infiltrometer is used to conduct infiltration measurements, and the Iron Enhanced Sand Filter removes phosphate from runoff.
