Community Engagement Scholars Program
Julia Birdsell, early childhood; Beck Sanchez, early childhood and developmental psychology; Amy Wegner, english and family social science; and Chae Young Wang, sport management, will receive the Community Engagement Scholars Program distinction.
The University of Minnesota award recognizes undergraduate students for outstanding community contributions. To be eligible, students enroll in the Community Engagement Scholars Program (CESP). As participants, students must complete at least eight credits of community-engaged learning coursework, at least 400 hours of community engagement, and six reflections. Scholars also complete an Integrative Community Engagement Project (ICEP) that results in the creation of a sustainable project for a community partner organization.
Academic Regalia
In 1895, the American Academic Costume Code standardized academic dress, including colors that denote fields of study. The color associated with education is light blue. Faculty regalia differs in the color of the robes and the hoods, based on the University from which they received their degree.
Students graduating with distinction wear gold honor cords, and students graduating with high distinction wear maroon and gold honor cords. Latin Honors graduates are awarded a Latin Honors medallion.
Graduates who participated in TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) are honored with black and red cords, the colors associated with TRIO programs. TRIO SSS is housed in CEHD and is a federally funded college opportunity program to support students from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds in their pursuit of a college degree.
Graduates who participated in the President’s Emerging Scholars (PES) program are honored with a purple commencement cord. The PES program is a four-year opportunity for select undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds and characteristics.
Decorative stoles represent a variety of affiliations with the University, student clubs, or professional organizations.
