Samson Jenekhe
Sandler is the H.B. du Pont Chair Emeritus in the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Delaware (UD). In 2017, he celebrated his 50-year anniversary as a faculty member at UD.
 Samson Jenekhe
Samson A. Jenekhe (MS ChE '80, MA Phil '81, PhD ChE '85), Boeing-Martin Professor of Chemical Engineering and Professor of Chemistry at the University of Washington, was awarded the prestigious 2021 APS Polymer Physics Prize
for "pioneering and sustained outstanding contributions to the synthesis, photophysics, and structure-morphology performance relationships in semiconducting polymers for electronic and photovoltaic applications."
Sandler pioneered the study
of chemical engineering
thermodynamics by the use
of correct equation of state
models for highly non-ideal
systems and developed ways
to use quantum mechanical calculations to predict physical properties. He published over 400 well-cited research papers, wrote a popular textbook, "Chemical and Engineering Thermodynamics," and authored, coauthored or edited seven other books. He provided exceptional service to the public in developing safe and environmentally acceptable methods to destroy chemical weapons.
In Memoriam
Donald DeHart (ChE '57, MS '61) passed away on May
1, 2021. He was a Fulbright scholar at the Sorbonne University in Paris and later joined Anheuser-Busch as an environmental engineer.
Athos "AJ" Monti (ChE '49, MBA '67) passed away on February 5, 2021. He served in the U.S. Navy and was an employee of General Mills for more than 35 years. A generous benefactor to CEMS, AJ created the Athas J. Monti Scholarship to benefit chemical engineering students in financial need.
David Plaut (PhD MSE '04) passed away on January
27, 2021 after an unbelievably courageous fight against leukemia starting in late 2012 and then against GVHD following a complete stem cell transplant a few months later. He worked as an engineer for 3M Company for over 10 years, earning ten U.S. patents.
Robert "Bob" Rogge (ChE '52) passed away on January 4, 2021. He had a successful career at 3M in the Industrial Specialties and the Adhesive, Coatings, and Sealants divisions.

Jenekhe's research interests include synthesis, photophysics, charge transport, electroluminescence,
and photovoltaic properties of conjugated polymers, organic electronics, energy conversion and storage systems, and self-assembly and nanotechnology. He is the author of over 300 research publications, three edited books, and 28 patents. He is a member of the American Physical Society (APS), the American Institute for Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Chemical Society, and the Materials Research Society. Jenekhe has served on several editorial advisory boards of journals, including Macromolecules. He was awarded the Charles M. A. Stine Award for Excellence in Materials Science
and Engineering from the AIChE in 2014 and was elected Member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences in 2013. Jenekhe is a Fellow of the APS, the AAAS, and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Stanley Sandler
Stanley I. Sandler (PhD ChE '66) has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University
of Minnesota Board of Regents. He was nominated for
the award by Eric W. Kaler, UMN President Emeritus
and CEMS Professor Emeritus, and Dan Frisbie, CEMS Department Head, for his contributions to the field of chemical engineering thermodynamics. The honorary degree is the highest award conferred by the University of Minnesota.
