  GIVING MATTERS
Annual “Give to the Next” Day provides much-needed scholarship support
The annual crowdfunding effort raised $17,285 for undergraduate scholarships.

In an ideal world, supply would always exceed demand. However, in terms of CEMS scholarships, that’s not always the case. For this academic year (AY 2021-
22), 35% of undergraduate students who applied
for departmental scholarships were not awarded. Established in 2019, CEMS “Give to the Next” Day provides an extra boost in fundraising in the hopes of closing that gap for students in need.
With a goal of raising $10,000, CEMS alumni and
friends continued to demonstrate their generosity and commitment to the next generation of materials scientists and chemical engineers by raising $13,785 on “Give to the Next” Day on October 1, 2021.
With $3,500 in matching funds, a grand total of $17,285 was raised for eight new scholarships! We are truly grateful for your support.
Special thanks to Roger (ChE ’59) and Carole Frommelt, Robert (PhD ChE ’65) and Carol Hermes, and Larry
(MetEng ’62) and Janet Johnson for providing the matching gift funds.
These students benefited from your “Give to the Next” Day gifts: Christopher Bienusa (ChE ’23), Matthew Boyd (ChE ’23), Kendall Duepner (ChE ’23), Audrey Fredricksen (ChE ’23), Elise Gallup (MSE ’22), Davis Lake (ChE ’22), Trevor Totten (MSE ’23) and Molly Totzke (MSE ’23).
Molly Totzke conveyed her appreciation: “I am
very thankful to have received a “Give to the Next” Scholarship as it will help me dedicate more time to my studies and it helps ease the financial burden of tuition and other expenses. I am from a working-class family who never had a lot of money and unfortunately, I am covering the cost of my education completely on my own. This scholarship gives me relief as the scholarship helps contribute to education costs that I would usually be covering with loans.”
