Loans
Student loans must be repaid. The University may offer federal loans as part of your financial aid offer after receiving your eligibility for grants, scholarships, and work study.
Student Loan Packages May Include:

Federal Direct Stafford Loan
Federal PLUS Loan (for parent/guardian)
$5,500 max. freshman year $6,500 max. sophomore year $7,500 max. junior & senior years
Loan amounts may be up to cost of attendance, and vary based on financial aid package and family’s credit-worthiness
     This is aid you earn.
Besides the federal loan program there are private loans that are non-need based and funded by private lenders. They are not part of the federal student loan program (and may have less favorable terms).

On-campus Employment
You need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for work-study. Work-study is included as part of your Financial Aid Offer.
If students do not qualify for need-based work study, UMD offers a variety of other on-campus employment opportunities that can reduce your overall additional expenses.
