DENTISTRY 2021
“It is a testament to how incredible the University of Minnesota and M Health communities are,” Uppgaard reflected, “that at a time of great stress, we can come together and work toward excellent patient care and the safety of our teams.”
At the same time, School of Den- tistry researchers began to suspect what we would soon confirm: that this new virus was spread through
aerosol droplets. Facing a new threat that dental safety practices were
not equipped to mitigate, Interim Associate Dean for Patient Care
and Clinical Services Paul Olin, DDS, MS, brought together a team of oral health and engineering professionals to determine how providers might be able to protect themselves and their patients.
Olin connected with Paul Jardine, PhD, a professor of diagnostic and biological sciences who studies bacteriophages, to simulate the transmission of aerosolized virus particles in a variety of dental prac- tice circumstances. They teamed up with Judy Danielson, MDH, clinical professor of developmental and surgical sciences in periodontology, to test dental procedures and
their production of aerosols on a mannequin.
To further understand how those aerosols might move throughout the room and possibly infect individuals, as well as how devices like a vacu- um or HEPA filter might stop that spread, the team worked with Gary Anderson, DDS, MS, a professor of

The team oversaw optical imaging through digital inline holography and laser sheet imaging to explore how devices like a saliva ejector, a high-volume extractor or an extra- oral local extractor might reduce the risk of infection.
