 Research
One of our guiding principles at the School of Dentistry is a commitment
to lifelong discovery through research that innovates the practice and study of dentistry. Our programs in basic sciences, clinical sciences, and social and behavioral sciences and public health bring current research into the classrooms, clinics and dental practices statewide.
We are home to five broad research clusters, investigating the diverse aspects of oral health.
        Biomaterials and Biomechanics
We have achieved an international reputation for our work in the development and testing of dental and dental-related materials. Much of this team’s work is done through the Minnesota Dental Research Center for Biomaterials and Biomechanics (MDRCBB).
Bone Biology and Craniofacial Development
Researchers study everything from basic bone biology to periodontal disease and dental implants, collaborating to study the mechanisms of cellular differentiation responsible for bone resorption.
Using genetically modified animals, these researchers induce specific defects in developing structures of the orofacial region and construct models that explain the roles individual genes play in their formation.
Oral Health Disparities and Community Health
Researchers work to decrease parental risk-related behavior for early childhood caries and encourage behavioral science and dental intervention, particularly in rural and underserved communities. This work often partners the School of Dentistry with the School of Public Health.
Oral Infections and Cancer
Researchers work to reduce the prevalence of caries and other oral infections, while studying how to make the oral mucosa more resistant to invasive oral pathogens. Virologists and basic researchers are working to combat periodontal disease, oral cancer, Sjogren’s syndrome and systemic implications.
Orofacial Pain and Neuroscience
Researchers study pain from a basic science and clinical perspective, working to better understand the mechanisms of chronic and cancer-induced pain and their prevention. These researchers collaborate with other pain researchers on campus and across the state.
