    Zigang Dong, M.D., Dr. P.H.
In 1995 Dr. Zigang Dong was recruited by then Executive Director Dr. Harald Schmid to broaden
The Hormel Institute’s scientific research to include an important new area - cancer research.
During its first 50 years The Hormel Institute became well known for pioneering work on the biochemistry, biophysics and nutrition of lipids, including essential fatty acids and more complex membrane lipids, and their relationship to heart disease. When it became necessary to add molecular biology, Dr. Dong came to Austin from the National Cancer Institute and immediately established
a successful Cellular and Molecular Biology lab, becoming the focus for The Hormel Institute’s further growth and development over the following decades.
