// UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA
THE BEGINNING
Founded in 1942 by Jay C. Hormel and The Hormel Foundation, and gifted to the University of Minnesota, The Hormel Institute was formed as a place to conduct scientific research and impact the world through science. The first lab was in a renovated horse stable at the Hormel family estate.
CELEBRATING
THE RESEARCH
The Hormel Institute’s research initially focused on food preservation and safety, swine disease, and other agricultural
and food related research important to Hormel Foods. Historic achievements include lipids discoveries and naming Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, to understanding the important connection between food and cancer. In the early 2000s, The Hormel Institute transformed with a focus on cancer research. Today our research focuses on major cancers – breast, prostate, skin, lung, brain – and lesser known cancers such as Wilms’ tumor. Other diseases including Alzheimers, coronavirus, and rare diseases like Cockayne syndrome are also researched here.
“The Hormel Institute is and will forever
be that unique place where the hopes
and generosity of people and the best of science and technology come together around the common theme of understanding complex disease processes and serving mankind with important discoveries and cures. It is special beyond special.”
State Senator David H. Senjem
