   Research Support Group
Kim Klukas / Supervisor
The Hormel Institute’s Research Support Group is continually striving to provide top notch services to the institute’s investigative staff. This past year team members attended national meetings, statewide seminars, and online short courses to finely tune their skill sets. Two team members are currently working towards becoming certified within the industry which will help to increase their specific knowledge and abilities required for maintaining high level research support. The team works hard to provide leading edge training and assistance to ensure high quality research here at The Hormel Institute.

Research Support Services has had a productive and energetic year as we have begun to modernize the IT infrastructure. Several very impactful contributions have been made to computational and storage capabilities. The institute added several Nvidia GPU systems and several AMD EPYC systems for computation. The Institute has acquired over 1.5 PB of new networked attached storage and now over 2.7 PB of offline storage capability (tape). We have also greatly improved our infrastructure by deploying a new uninterruptible power supply system to provide

continuous power to all of our important IT systems. We have continued
to provide instrument maintenance along with computer, telecommuni- cation, network, and Internet support
for The Hormel Institute.
Maintenance includes a wide variety of scientific instruments, from complex to simple and large to small. Computers and network connectivity are an extremely important resource for researchers and a major portion of our work load.
