   COMMUNITY OUTREACH
COMMUNITY ADVISORY BOARD
The Hormel Institute has a newly formed Community Advisory Board consisting
of nine community leaders. This board will meet biannually and provide recom- mendations and actions related to community engagement and educational opportunities in southeastern Minnesota and surrounding states related to the biomedical research, training, and education occurring at The Hormel Institute. The board will also monitor the effectiveness of authentic community engagement approaches of current HI community outreach and educational activities.
The Hormel Institute at the Cedar River Farmers Market
This summer and fall, a booth with Hormel Institute employees could be found at the Cedar River Farmers Market. Here they had the opportunity to share research through hands-on learning activities for youth, answer scientific questions for market-goers, and most importantly, engage with members of the community.
Austin Welcoming Week: Multicultural Potluck and Sculpture Reveal
Taking part in Austin’s Welcoming Week, The Hormel Institute hosted a community multi-cultural potluck and artistic tree sculpture reveal. The tree was created during Austin’s 4th Avenue Fest in June. Members of the community as well as community leaders were able to participate in the creation of this cast metal artwork. This successful event provided many community members, researchers, and staff in attendance the opportunity to “taste a dish from your culture.” Individuals enjoyed live authentic Korean music as well as hands-on crafts provided by the Wow Mobile Metal Lab.
