62 | THE HORMEL INSTITUTE // UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA OPERATIONS DEPARTMENTS
  Development and External Relations
Gail Dennison MA, CFRE / Director
Our department works to bring together individual donors, corporate partners, community groups, foundations, and others to support and advance the important research happening
at The Hormel Institute. While COVID-19 continues to impact our community and fundraising events, we are grateful for the support you have provided and the events that were able to take place this past year.
Through fundraising campaigns, philanthropic gifts, major planned gifts, and annual donations, eight community-funded research awards were provided this year, resulting in innovative research projects now underway. Because of the generous support of The Hormel Foundation, 100% of your donation
is used to accelerate discoveries and advance research.
We deeply appreciate the generous support that makes this progress possible.
  Community Outreach and Education
Kelly Vincelette, M.Ed. / Manager
The mission of the Community Outreach and Education department is to reduce the burden of cancer in the Austin community, surrounding region and the entire state of Minnesota by engaging communities and providing useable, culturally-appropriate education about cancer prevention, treat- ment, and biomedical research happening at the Institute.
This past year, we have been establishing new partnerships and expanding existing ones by offering more programs to the communities we serve. We are striving to
bring our scientists to more community platforms to share their research exper- tise with students, educators, stakeholders, and community leaders. Through these outreach and educational efforts we are better able to further our reach and achieve our mission.
Marketing and Communications
Raquel Hellman / Manager
I joined The Hormel Institute in April, filling the new position of Marketing and Communications Manager. The position was developed to take the growing Institute’s external and internal communications to the next level. I have more than a decade of experi- ence in journalism and a passion for cancer research, so I am very excited to share the breakthroughs
and discoveries of The Hormel Institute’s scientists through all types of communication channels, including the Institute’s website, social media, electronic newsletters, and media releases.
