Students of the Undergraduate Working Group
The Undergraduate Working Group is an essential part of the Human Rights Program. They
ensure that the voices of undergraduate students are included in decisions shaping the
curriculum and program. This year’s members included 13 dedicated undergraduates
committed to addressing human rights issues and engaging in advocacy on campus
and globally.
Human rights is multidisciplinary, and the working group draws students from a variety of majors
from economics to English studies. They joined the working group motivated by their courses,
professors, and academic projects, as well as potentially pursuing careers related to human
rights. The working group members' interests span a wide range of issues, including
environmental rights, advocacy for marginalized communities, and addressing both global and
local injustices. The year’s activities included hosting bi-weekly Brewing Justice Coffee Hours at
Bordertown Coffee where students gathered to discuss human rights issues. In November, the
Working Group hosted a letter writing campaign to urge the Supreme Court of Honduras to grant
amnesty to Carlos Eduardo Ávila Aguilera, a journalist facing persecution for exposing corruption
in Honduras.
Human
Students conducted research, explored curricular programming, contributed to the Human
WritesWrites Blog, and supported program events. Together, they worked on a range of projects to
promote human rights and create spaces within the undergraduate community for greater
student engagement.
