MIKE FINGERSON
BME 1954, M.S. ‘55, Ph.D. ‘61
ME alum Leroy “Mike” Fingerson (1932- 2022) grew his small, private enterprise into TSI, a leading producer of precision instruments that measure everything from fluid dynamics to biohazards.
TSI’s initial inventions were founded on
Fingerson’s PhD work at the U, focusing on anemometry, or the measure of air flow. He first made cool-
film anemometers out of his basement and eventually grew TSI into a worldwide company. As Fingerson’s company grew, so too did its partnerships with the innovative engineers and scientists at the University of Minnesota. Upon his retirement in 1998,
the Fingersons and TSI endowed a chair in the Department of
Mechanical Engineering.
