One of the things we brag about when talking to prospective students is the incredible network of engineering firms surrounding CEGE in the greater Twin Cities area and, especially, how supportive and involved they are with our students.
Here are just a few ways our community supports and connects with CEGE students. Thanks to the many companies—just a smattering mentioned here—that step up!
Capstone students visited their mentors’ offices at BKBM Engineers in 2023. Pictured, from left to right, Emirlan Askerbekov, Noah Struck, Griffin Dunnigan, Blake Glewwe.
The Capstone Design for CEGE course is a pinnacle experience
for students. We are thankful to firms that support their employees mentoring students through a semester-long project.A few of our devoted mentors, Paul Eickenberg (Stantec), Suresh Hettiarachchi, Jihshya Lin (MnDOT), and Chad Millner (City of Edina), have each shepherded more than 10 groups over the years— however, that level of commitment is not required! Mentor companies for spring 2024 include City of Edina, HDR, Arcadis, ERA, Stantec, and Westwood.
Many companies lend experts to speak in CEGE classes. Students gobble up their expertise whether they are new grads speaking
about first year experiences and taking the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam or nearly-retired alums talking about leadership and ethics.
WSB supports our students daily through the WSB Study Lounge on the second floor of the Civil Engineering Building. The lounge was dedicated in 2013 and, even with no coffee shop attached,
it has been named a favorite study area on campus.
Stantec sends representatives to the Civil Engineering Building to teach Auto CAD in a series of hands-on sessions in the computer lab. Kathleen Taylor posted on LinkedIn, “In under two months, Dylan Crawford graduated from the University of Minnesota, started at Stantec, and returned to teach his first Stantec AutoCAD course alongside his mentor, Haley Kuechle, EIT.”
Delany Moberly and Dan Phillipiak from SRF talked to capstone students about project management. Afterward, three students got one-on-three input on their environmental remediation project.
AJ Tabura (SRF), Justin Babcock (WSB) Sarah Schweiger (City of Minnetonka), and Sam Larson (AE2S) came to talk with students about networking and participating in professional societies.
