  CEMS NEWS
Fond farewell continued from page 7
the University of Minnesota has been a wonderful place
to work. CEMS is a great department, and I’ve enjoyed my interactions with some very interesting faculty, staff, and students. Overall, I’ve met a lot of cool people at the “U.”
Looking Forward
It only takes a few snowstorms and a treacherously
long commute to make a person consider retirement, especially in January! “It will be nice not having to deal with traffic and weather if I don’t need to,” said Teresa. She has other plans as well. “My husband, Mike, and I plan on traveling (someday soon - hopefully), hiking, working
in the yard, finishing projects on the house and cabin, and visiting with friends (again hopefully soon). We also plan on spending more time with my grandson, our sons, their wives and our siblings,” she said.
Mary’s future also includes many outdoor adventures. “I’m looking forward to more mushrooming forays, more kayaking, more gardening. And eventually making some extensive road trips and trips to other countries. Plan to start taking more courses in my spare time: more Latin for one!”
Bob would like to pick up his drum sticks again soon, among other things. “In retirement I hope to have more time to myself for reading, music (I dearly miss my jazz septet, which pre-pandemic met in my basement every Sunday afternoon), swimming, skiing, snowshoeing, Tai Chi, etc. My wife and I hope to spend more time at our place in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula,” he said.
Wieslaw hopes to maintain some scientific connections and enhancing those with family, saying, “I will miss working in the laboratory, conducting experiments, interacting with CEMS faculty, students, industrial fellows and staff members. During my retirement, I am planning to do some consulting work. Hopefully, I will design and build a wood-fired pizza oven and no flare-ups grill. I also want to travel to see nature in this country and abroad, and of course, I want to spend more time with my grandchildren.”
Best Wishes

I hope people remember me as someone who was trying to help. I am proud of my role editing the CEMS newsletter
and enjoy that very much.”
Teresa said, “I will miss the people in the department. The graduate students and
post-docs are the greatest. They have taught me about their cultures, religions, their families, and traditions. The thing that I am most proud of is that the students can feel comfortable with me and feel that they can come to me for a shoulder to lean on, an ear to listen and hopefully, a friend.”
Bob said, “Some of my fondest memories involve the IPRIME Annual Meeting, where new relationships were formed, old ones renewed and true technical innovation occurred. In retiring, I will obviously miss the people, some of whom have become very good, lifelong friends. I’m proudest of having grown IPRIME to more than
50 companies, and then, after the losses during the 2007/2008 financial crisis, having grown it again. I hope people remember that I was easy to work with, using humor to keep things light but focused on getting things done.”
Wieslaw continued, “I am most proud of building, and later, expanding, the unique coating processes research facility, internationally known as the Coating Process
and Visualization Laboratory, from the beginning and
for over twenty years under the leadership of Professor Skip Scriven and now, Professor Lorraine Francis. When
I started my work in the department, there was almost
no equipment for research and none for scientific visualization in the rooms allocated for the coating research laboratory. Now, the laboratory is capable of doing experiments in classical coating techniques, but also in printed flexible electronics. I hope people will remember me as always ready to help with new research projects.”
