If you do not receive a response from your first request, it is appropriate to follow-up once, about two weeks after your initial request. A follow-up email may look like this:
  Dear Mr. Jensen:
My name is Elizabeth Andrews and I am a second-year MBA student at the Carlson School of Management.
I found your contact information through the Carlson School alumni page.
I am emailing you today in regard to your position with Ameriprise Financial. My focus at the Carlson School is in financial services and I was hoping to set up a time to speak with you about your role at Ameriprise and to discuss the financial services industry in general.
This conversation should take 20–30 minutes and I would be happy to meet you at the coffee shop closest to your office. I would be available anytime on March 21, from 8:00 a.m.–noon on March 25, or from 3:00– 5:00 p.m. on March 26. Would one of these times work for you? If not, I would be happy to send you
additional availability.
Thank you in advance for your time and I look forward to speaking with you directly.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Andrews

NOTE: If you do not hear back from the contact after a second attempt, it is best to move on to another contact.
  Dear Mr. Jackson,
Thank you for taking the time to meet with me yesterday. I appreciate your willingness to support Carlson School students such as myself.
I especially appreciated learning about how you made the decision to enter consulting. I have been reflecting on your career path and decided I would like to find a volunteer consulting opportunity to experience this role directly. Also, I have taken your advice and have reached out to all three of the contacts you suggested.
Again, thank you for your help. I hope to keep in touch with you in the future.
Sincerely, Joanne Samuels
