Zigang Dong was named Executive Director in 2001 and thanks to the support of
The Hormel Foundation, the State of Minnesota and the community, great progress and a virtual transformation of The Hormel Institute followed. Dr. Schmid’s strategy (cancer research) and investment made by The Hormel Foundation ($50 plus million) resulted in development of an institute transformed into a world class medical research facility. A growing body of expert researchers were hired from some of the best medical research institutions in the country - Columbia University, University of Notre Dame, MD Anderson, Mayo Clinic and Yale University among others.
