TOMORROW’S SCIENTISTS
The concerns of COVID-19 have moved much of education online and we regret not being able to support students’ science education in person or invite them to The Hormel Institute. Thanks to technology, we are grateful we could move forward with our outreach efforts despite the challenges of COVID-19. Education outreach has been part of
The Hormel Institute’s mission since the very beginning. Our mission is to conduct research and provide education in the biological sciences and share our knowledge with the world. We will continue to strive to inspire interest in science and prepare people for successful biomedical careers. This past year we employed creative measures so we could continue to move that mission forward, and stay on target to train, inspire and instruct potential future scientists of the world.
POST-DOCs
This year a Post-Doc Association was created to further support post-docs at The Hormel Institute. Similar to a new doctor who must complete a residency for further training, a student who has earned a doctorate of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree must complete post doctoral training.
The training the senior scientists of The Hormel Institute gives to new post docs is a critically important part of their career path.
COLLEGE
The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) internship was cancelled this year due to COVID-19, but out
of a desire to support students pursuing careers in research or health related fields, some section leaders hosted college seniors virtually by providing opportunities for them to work remotely on research projects. These undergraduate students were able to expand their knowledge of basic research as well as learn about techniques that are generally not available in undergraduate academic programs.
