Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Internship
This summer, The Hormel Institute hosted 11 students as part of the SURE Internship program. This 10-week internship program enables students to work alongside with Hormel Institute scientists in their labs
on biomedical research projects to expands students’ knowledge of basic research as well as gain first- hand experience learning about equipment and techniques that are generally not available in undergraduate academic programs. Students are selected for the SURE internship program based on their high level of academic achievements and their passion to pursue careers in science.
“Participating in this internship at The Hormel Institute was one of the
best decisions I have made for my future career. The 10-week program allowed me to immerse myself
in research and learn about the challenging yet rewarding lifestyle of world-class researchers. This has been invaluable to my personal
and professional development.”
Max Holt, SURE intern
In addition to lab experiences, students can participate in weekly professional development courses. At the end of the summer, students participate in a presentation and poster session highlighting their summer work and learning.
In 2021, interns finished the program with a stronger interest in a career in the medical field related to their internship experience and felt more likely to continue to pursue a science related profession because of their experience at The Hormel Institute.
   Zoom Professional Development Series
Dr. Jarrod French and four other Scientists throughout the United States have teamed up to offer a virtual professional development series for over 30 summer interns through-out eight states, including SURE interns at The Hormel Institute. Students participating in this development series enhance both their learning and internship experience through topics including: professional networks and LinkedIn, Implicit Bias, resumes, CVs and IDPs, Grad School, Informational Interviews, con-PhD science career panel, challenges and opportunities for women in STEM,
and science careers away from the bench.
