Director of Education
The education mission of the Depart- ment of Integrative Biology and Phys- iology (IBP) focuses on physiology and anatomy classes aimed at under- graduate, graduate and professional students. For the year ending in June 2020, we offered more than 40 sepa- rate courses reaching over 3,000
students and yielding total revenue of approximately $6 million, (including our January Short Courses for industry profession- als). Our 6 fulltime teaching faculty are Drs. Anderson, Barnett, Cook, Olson, Weinhaus and Wu. In addition, the IBP research faculty all contribute to our teaching excellence. Also essential to our teaching mission are about a dozen part time faculty and over 50 student teaching assistants! In August, Dr. Ryan Knigge joined the the Anatomy program, as an assistant professor. Welcome, Dr. Knigge!
The Physiology and Anatomy faculty continue to educate physi- ology majors, biomedical engineering students, allied health and pre-allied health students through our undergraduate and professional programs. Dr. Olson’s new A&P course (Phsl 1001) was approved this past spring and will be taught for the first time in the Spring of 2021. Dr. Barnett launched his new course, Physiology in Medicine. Dr. Xavier Revelo submitted a new course, Phsl 5211, The Physiology of Immunology in Disease.
The medical education program continues to excel. Medical Gross Anatomy was successfully delivered this past fall under the leadership of Dr. Weinhaus, and the hard work of the Anato- my faculty Medical physiology. Students rated Anatomy 4.7 on a scale of 5 as a course they found valuable. Medical Physiology under the Direction of Dr. Anderson also received great evalua- tions from the students; they rated physiology 4.5 on a scale of 5 as a course they found valuable.
Thank you to all our teachers. On average our undergraduate courses are rated as a 5.1 on a scale of 6. Our graduate courses are rated 5.42 on a scale of 6. Because of their work, we are meeting the Dean’s excellence metrics! Both the department and the students appreciate their work.

We started the first full academic year under the new ban- ner of Human Physiology as the name for our Bachelor’s degree program. Our majors have fully embraced the new name, which highlights the focus of our undergraduate educational mission.
The Undergraduate Physiology Society (UPS) participated in the U’s Welcome Week festivities offering a “Brain Freeze” challenge with physiology trivia questions with popsicles as prizes. The event offered UPS an opportunity to share the se- mester’s events calendar with incoming freshmen. This was

second week of fall classes. Near the
end of September, our students add-
ed the UPS logo to the Washington
Avenue bridge in the annual “Paint
the Bridge” event. Preparations were
made for Homecoming October 4th
and we were treated to the pre-parade
practice of the Winter Carnival’s St. Paul
Bouncing Squad who tossed a few of
our officers just for fun! UPS gathered
just prior to Halloween to make fleece
blankets that were donated to the Children’s Hospital and a group was organized to pack meals for “Feed My Starving Children” in early November. UPS concluded the fall term with a group movie session that featured episodes of Dr. Lisa Sanders, MD (Yale University) documentary series “Diagnosis” on the investigation of rare disorders.
I was joined by Dr. Dalay Olson in a cooperative effort be- tween IBP and CLA’s Biology, Society & Environment major (BSE) as well as the CLA Career Services Office in organizing the Seeing U
in HealthCare diversity panel discussion. This event brought under- graduates from Human Physiology and BSE to- gether with practitioners of color from medicine,
