Hear directly from the presidents of
STUDENT GROUP: SHE is ME
Interview with Co-President Maddy Wagner Albert Swanson Memorial Scholar
“I joined She is ME because I met one of the founders in the basement
of my dorm, Frontier Hall. She was tutoring, and I was printing some homework for my biomedical engineering courses. We started chatting about our majors, courses, and homework, and she mentioned that I should consider mechanical engineering. After some exploration and meeting some She is ME members, I decided to change my major and join the board as a freshman.
Seeing a group of female students passionate about mechanical engineering got me excited about studying it. Since then, I have served as co-president for two years.
This group has become a networking opportunity professionally and personally, a group to commiserate success and failure with, and an exceptional leadership opportunity. In addition to group events, planning the Women’s Alumnae Event and meeting many successful engineers was an incredible opportunity.
Academically, after seeing many former board members completing the 5-year integrated bachelor’s/master’s ME degree, I am completing the program myself. This group has kept me engaged with my major and future career, and I am extremely grateful for the resulting opportunities.
She is ME was created to unify female mechanical engineers and grow a community of leaders who are ready and willing to tackle the industry. Through our events, we
hope to connect students to leaders both within the university and industry, and provide them with opportunities to grow their skills and embrace their love for engineering.”
