FRANK KULACKI
After 50 years in academia, including 30 at the University of Minnesota, Professor Frank Kulacki retired in January of 2022.
A leader in heat transfer research, he spent his career furthering understanding of free convection, forced convection, convection in porous media, and multiphase flow in dilute suspensions. His work has been applied to nuclear waste disposal, electronic packaging, avionics management, and geophysical heat transfer.
Kulacki also spent 15 years in administration, during which he led a successful effort that moved the University of Minnesota toward a campus-wide computing environment. Kulacki received the ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award, AIChE Donald Q. Kern Award, and ASME Edwin F. Church Award, and was named a distinguished alumnus of the Illinois Institute of Technology. He is a Fellow of the ASME, AAAS, and ASTFE.
When asked what
advice he has for new
engineers, Kulacki
responded, “Deepen
your engineering and
scientific knowledge
and abilities. Be ready
for new challenges not
directly related to your
undergraduate studies.
Widely read history,
economics and the
humanities, and stay
informed on current
affairs. Develop and maintain an appropriate presence in our business and professional communities.”
  Kulacki’s retirement celebration
In retirement, Kulacki plans to spend time at his homes in Long Lake, MN, and Venice, FL.
