The 2022 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, released by Shanghai Ranking, has once again recognized the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities as one of the world’s leading research universities. UMN ME ranked 18th globally, with the Twin Cities campus at 40th overall.
“These rankings are the latest to reflect our well-earned research excellence,” said Executive Vice President and Provost Rachel Croson. “We are particularly proud to see such a broad array of scientific disciplines celebrated in these rankings, demonstrating the breadth of the University and our faculty’s ability to generate discoveries in multiple fields that address the complex challenges facing our world.”

                A message from the
DEPARTMENT HEAD
I’m now entering my fourth year as department head, and I can confidently say our department is exceeding expectations. Our students continue to win awards, get jobs at leading companies and top universities, and participate in groundbreaking research. Our faculty are making major breakthroughs that will improve our everyday lives from clean water systems to curing diabetes.
One of the goals in our strategic plan is to build community. This means many different things. I am proud of the work being done to create a welcoming environment within the department, to engage our alumni, and to get off campus into various areas of the Twin Cities to inspire tomorrow’s mechanical engineers. Thank you for being a part of the ME community.
