Department Head James J. Ryan Professor

DEPARTMENT HEAD
One of the many things I love about mechanical engineering is its wide reach. There are mechanical engineers involved in almost everything people use
in their daily lives, across the world. So many of the challenges that society faces will rely on mechanical engineering to come up with a solution. Many of those solutions are being worked on in Minnesota, making a global impact that starts in a lab on the East Bank of the Mississippi River right here in Minneapolis.
This newsletter focuses on the international research being conducted by faculty members, students, and postdoctoral researchers every day at UMN ME. From students designing life-saving kidney dialysis techniques to faculty launching research equipment into low Earth orbit, the work being done in our department is robust, wide-ranging, and impactful. I hope you enjoy reading about the small portion of that work that can fit on these pages!
I am closing out my first full semester as department head, and it continues to be an honor, a challenge, and an endless source of growth. I became an educator because I enjoyed being a student, and I find that I have never stopped learning. That curiosity fuels our research and my teaching, and I feel it spark when I walk the halls at ME, as I’m sure you did in your time here.
ME has an international faculty with diverse backgrounds. Take a look at this map of where our faculty members earned their degrees:
