Engineers Without Borders
The mission of student group Engineers Without Borders USA – University of Minnesota is to partner with communities locally and internationally in order to assess and address community-identified unmet needs. The group strives to implement engineered projects that prove environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable.
At the core of this mission is a commitment to building strong relationships with partner communities and organizations, institutional resources (including within the U and more broadly at EWB-USA), student volunteers, and professional mentors.
Of EBW-USA UMN’s 57 members, 14 are mechanical engineers. That’s almost 25% of the group! This includes the group’s current president, Mihir Madhaparia, and fundraising officer, Jacob Brule.
This past summer, a team of eight students and two mentors traveled to Malawi to implement a water distribution system at a rural primary school. The project was designed to provide the school and surrounding community with reliable access to clean water, significantly improving daily life. In addition, the team oversaw the construction of two new latrine
blocks to enhance sanitation
and promote better health
practices. This collaborative
effort was a vital step
toward fostering sustainable
development and improving
the overall quality of life for the
community.
