How did you decide to collaborate and identify a shared interest in Tropical Medicine?
We are all second-year emergency medicine residents at Regions Hospital.
We share an interest in global health specifically to tailoring medicine to underserved communities, both in the international community as well as locally. After recognizing our shared interests, we hoped to supplement our residency education with a tropical medicine program offered at the University of Minnesota. With the help of both the Andersen Grant and the Knowledge Bank, we were able to register for and begin the program. Since our intern year, we have been anticipating that this program would serve as a sounding board for our interests as well as a bridge to becoming credentialed in tropical medicine.
You have been participating in Tropical Medicine curriculum during your residency. What have you learned during this educational opportunity?
The curriculum for the tropical medicine program focuses on infectious disease, travel medicine, public health, immigrant and refugee health, and disaster relief. The topics are diverse and overlap with, but outstretch, a lot of the learning that is found within the curricula at Regions Hospital that is more specifically tailored to a career in emergency medicine. With lectures given by experts
in the field on subjects ranging from malaria treatment and control to water and sanitation management, we have been challenged to incorporate a public health mindset into a broadening clinical perspective. We are grateful for the opportunity to expand the breadth and depth of our education during residency and are excited about what this extra training will lead to.
What are your future plans for incorporating Tropical Medicine into your career?
We hope to translate the experience into a research project aimed at addressing needs within underserved populations within Minnesota and potentially abroad. In addition to the research project or any outcomes from it, we ultimately hope that the material and educational content within the course will serve as an initial step when planning out our careers and any future endeavors that we may take on, both within emergency medicine and global health.
