JUNIOR: MARA HALLCOCK
Agricultural Communication and Marketing Major Animal Science Minor
Mara grew up assisting with her family’s row crop farm and cattle operation. She also had numerous opportunities to competitively showcase livestock across the country, sparking her desire for a future career in the livestock industry. Mara fondly recalls visiting the beautiful U of M campus during her 4-H days, instantly falling in love and knowing she wanted to attend the U of M. Her experiences at the University of Minnesota have been incredibly positive, as she has connected with numerous students who share similar interests and has been presented with many great opportunities.
During a summer internship with Conagra Brands, Mara served as an agriculture operations intern, engaging with commercial vegetable growers throughout Minnesota. This experience equipped her with effective communication skills, allowing her to interact seamlessly with diverse individuals across the state. Mara attributes her success in the internship to the courses taught by Dr. Steede’s and Dr. McKay, which strengthened her communication and marketing skills, skills she can carry into her future career.
Senior: Luke Borst
Agricultural Communication and Marketing Major Agricultural and Food Business Mangement Minor
Luke’s upbringing on his family’s dairy farm ignited his passion for agriculture and the mission of feeding the world. Driven by this passion, he was determined to contribute to the agriculture industry, though uncertain about the specific path. This uncertainty led him to choose the ACM major, a broad field that enables students to explore various aspects of agriculture.
Upon entering college, his experience surpassed all expectations, discovering countless opportunities and incredible moments both within and outside his major.
Now a senior, Luke advises current students and incoming freshmen to immerse themselves in involvement, particularly in organizations that align with their interests. He emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with passionate individuals, as this fosters personal growth. Despite the challenges of managing multiple commitments, Luke believes that such involvement imparts valuable skills that will prove beneficial in future careers.
