JUNIOR: RENA JOHNSON
Agricultural Education Major Agronomy Minor
Rena hails from Buffalo, Minnesota. She grew up
in 4-H and FFA and loved being involved since
she was little. When it came to her senior year of high school, she knew she wanted to continue her passion for ag ed into college and help others have a great experience in ag programs, just like she was able to have. She couldn’t imagine doing anything else! Through her internships, she has grown to love working within the agronomy field and has loved the work of helping farmers improve their crops and operations.
Rena came to the U of M because it is close to home and she loves having classes on the St. Paul campus because it has a small community feel in a big city.
Rena’s advice to students is to simply find what you love to do! The agriculture industry is so big and college can be a lot, but don’t limit yourself to what you think you want when you’re first coming into college. Apply for the internship, put yourself out there, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. The AECM program has supportive professors and academic advisors that are always willing to lend a hand or a listening ear whenever you need it.
Senior: KARLI KNOPF
Agricultural Education, Communication and Marketing Double Major & Animal Science Minor
Karli was drawn to U of M because of the small town feel in a big city. She noted that the staff
has been extremely supportive of her educational and professional journey. She has not met one professor that has not been willing to go above and beyond to help her accomplish goals and achieve success.
She has been actively involved in many clubs, organizations and activities during her time on campus. These include the AECM Club, ATA conclave, GDC club, NAMA, LDPhi Sorority, Sustainable Plant Systems club and has studied abroad in Greece, Sweden, and Denmark. Every one of these clubs and activities enhanced Karli’s college experience and allowed her to grow an extensive network.
One professor that has had a significant impact on Karli’s academic journey has been Dr. Laura Rice. “Dr. Rice always goes above and beyond to truly prepare us students to teach in our classrooms. Her door is always open and she is constantly willing to help us get through roadblocks as we are creating our curriculum and preparing our lessons,” says Karli.
