Repackaging Your Resume for a Career Change
As you negotiate a career change, you will need to identify your transferable skills—what you have done or accomplished that directly relates to the new profession. Start with the competencies required by your target job and then build your resume so it directly addresses each of them. You will likely need to re-order your bullet points so they are in order from most to least relevant. Below is an excerpt from a real resume showing a changing career path from IT to marketing.

• Conducted competitive and consumer analysis communicating need to lower average price points
• Identified churn customer service requests that resulted in the definition of a new shipping strategy
• Developed and presented a Hispanic and Canadian marketing strategy identifying high growth segments
Project Management
• Managed a software development team that performed major system changes for USAPA
• Created training and operations manuals which reduced issue resolution time across call centers
• Resolved customer credit/debit issues by collaborating with finance and credit departments
Software Development
• Developed software for business critical systems built on Oracle 11i and Java
• Developed application in Java to route transactions to various back-end payment processors
   Note that this person clearly delineated accomplishments by competency. In some cases, it is fine to categorize them in this manner. You can also use this as a framework for organizing your bullet points, but remove the sub-headers (leaving the content organized from most relevant to the new profession to least relevant).
