The Liberal Education Program
Make it your own!
Along with your major, a liberal educa- tion is one of the main pillars of your learning here at UMD. By providing intellectual breadth that complements the depth of knowledge in your major, you will be prepared for a diverse and ever-changing world.
The courses in the Liberal Education Program prepare you to lead produc- tive and socially responsible lives, help you develop competencies that can be adapted to any occupation or situation, and offer the kind of broad education we need to thrive as lifelong learners and globally engaged citizens.

BULLDOG TIP
Woven through each student’s course of study, including degree and major requirements, the Liberal Education Program supports UMD’s goal to develop broadly educated students who are “Prepared, Informed, and Committed.”
The program is built around three component parts:

Logic & Quantitative Reasoning, Oral Communication & Languages, Theorizing Race, Power & Justice, Writing & Information Literacy
Part II: Knowledge Domains Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Fine Arts
Part III: Key Topic areas
