Master of Science in Dentistry
The MS in Dentistry program is designed to prepare dentists and dental hygienists for leadership positions in education, research and program administration that will complement their areas of clinical expertise.
Taught by the School of Dentistry’s graduate faculty of dental educators, researchers and clinicians, the program includes coursework in teaching and evaluation, research methods and biostatistics and program administration. This program is open to students who are or will
be enrolled in one of our participating clinical residency programs.
When you graduate with your MS in Dentistry, you will be prepared to lead in clinical and educational settings.
Specialties and Advanced Education
About 20-30% of our DDS students will continue their education with an advanced degree. With full access to eight advanced education disciplines, the University of Minnesota is the ideal place to specialize in an advanced discipline with our highly qualified faculty experts.
Our advanced education and graduate programs prepare you for a career in specialty practice,
as well as advanced general dentistry, research, education and administration.
Advanced clinical specialty training programs are offered in endodontics, periodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, prosthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics and orofacial pain. These programs range in length from 24 to 48 months and offer certificates and master’s degrees.
 Dual Degree Options
Ready to pursue dentistry while preparing for
a future in research or public health? Our dual degree options allow you to work toward a PhD or Master of Public Health alongside your DDS.
Our DDS/PhD track prepares you to meet the challenges of interdisciplinary research and advancing technology. This eight-year program prepares you for a career in academia, industry, government research institutes and clinical practice. You are strongly encouraged to enroll in the PhD
in Oral Biology, where you will gain a broad understanding of the development, structure, function and pathology of the orofacial region.
A complementary minor in another field, such as molecular biology, genetics or neuroscience, is required.
As a DDS/MPH student, you will learn how to shape a dental practice that serves the whole community. You will be prepared to apply population-based science to your dental practice, improve effectiveness and opportunities and understand, assess and manage population health in a variety of settings. You can tailor the MPH to fit your practice and career goals in this high-tech and high-touch program designed to support your goals and lifestyle.
Master of Science and PhD programs in oral biology are offered through the University’s Graduate School for those who wish to pursue advanced basic science training. Master of Science and
PhD degrees are also offered in clinical research, biological sciences and public health through the University’s Graduate School and the School of Public Health.
