Research Labs
Biofilms, Apatite And Microbiomes Lab
The BAM lab studies topical-based strategies for reducing biofilm coverage and mitigating the effects of biofilms exposed to sucrose. Researchers work on projects related to caries, biomaterials and pediatric oral health.
Hard Tissue Research Laboratory
The HTRL works with corporate, educational and government research programs to study bone implants, bone grafting materials and techniques, and bone augmentation.
Institute for Molecular Virology
A multi-college research-focused institute, the IMV promotes virology education and applications. The IMV is working to improve the health of Minnesotans and beyond with education, outreach and research.
Minnesota Dental Research Center for Biomaterials and Biomechanics
The MDRCBB is the leader of development of novel techniques for the characterization and modeling of dental biomaterials. A highlight of the Center, our
“artificial mouth” can be programmed to precisely reproduce the chewing cycle. Investigators have used the automated machine to put restorative materials to the test, analyze food texture and more.
Student research and training
As a University of Minnesota learner, you will work alongside key researchers to engage in health discovery in concordance with your studies. In addition to opportunities to join faculty in labs,
the School of Dentistry provides programs and training opportunities that prepare you to engage in interdisciplinary, cutting-edge research.
Summer Research Fellowship Program
The Summer Research Fellowship Program allows current and incoming dental students to research with a faculty mentor. This ten-week summer experience is a structured experience, leading to the opportunity to produce a written report and poster presentation at local and regional student research meetings in the spring semester.
Minnesota Craniofacial Research Training Program (MinnCResT)
While we engage in research discovery, we are training the next generation of independent investigators
in craniofacial, oral health and dental research at MinnCResT. Supported by a major grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, the MinnCResT Program supports graduate students and postdoctoral fellows seeking to begin, continue, or expand their research careers in fields like biology, neuroscience, microbiology, genetics, engineering, immunology, psychology, dentistry, medicine and more. This multidisciplinary team studies questions that are fundamental to biology and human health, applying them to expand the scope of oral health.
Oral Health Clinical Research Center
At the School of Dentistry, we are committed to applying what we study and making a real impact on oral health. Launched in 1990 with a $2.5 million National Institutes of Health grant, The Oral Health Clinical Research Center (OHCRC) enhances oral health by transferring basic and applied research knowledge and new technical advances into patient-oriented research. Our researchers translate knowledge into the clinical setting, test new technologies, encourage innovation, and connect research with clinical practice. The Center maintains a clinical practice, where new scientific discovery is implemented every day.
