12 | THE HORMEL INSTITUTE // UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA
WE ARE WHAT WE EAT. This is the “one health” approach driving the vision of the Future of Advanced Agricultural Research Minnesota (FAARM) project, a UMN advanced agricultural research complex that will drive advancements in farm and food technology for better food and better health—all from right here in Mower County.
Researchers at FAARM will study virtually every aspect about the ways we raise cattle, swine, and poultry—such as the crops we feed them and the ways that soil health, water quality, and climate impact their health (and as a result, ours).
At The Hormel Institute, we are thrilled about the ways FAARM will allow us to expand our partnership with the University of Minnesota and Riverland Community Col- lege, furthering our research collaborations toward our mission to conduct research and provide education in the biological sciences with applications in medicine and agriculture.
Several of our new faculty and research initiatives continue to expand into new areas of food, nutrition, and agriculture research. Ultimately, we are exploring how these factors can influence
or reduce our risks for cancer and other diseases, improve our metabolisms for better overall health. New collaborations and studies are underway this year at HI and we look forward to continuing to grow in these research directions.
When I first came across The Hormel Institute and its research on foods that can prevent and control cancer, the strong connection between our organizations and what we could achieve was clear. Thanks to our member-owners, we can now support the important work
of The Hormel Institute’s food scientists in a major way.
