       Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship program at Children’s Minnesota has been training PEM physicians since 1989. The program is unique in that it offers two facilities, one in Minneapolis and one in St Paul, with comprehensive emergency care offered at both sites. The Minneapolis campus is certified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 1 pediatric trauma center.
The program has nine PEM fellows supported by 42 Pediatric Emergency Medicine trained physicians. This comprises the largest pediatric emergency trained staff in the region.
The hospitals see a combined volume of approximately 90,000 emergency department visits per year.
Physician Assistant Fellowship
In 2023, our PA fellowship program continued
to thrive while collaborating directly with the
EM residency program. A rigorous 18-month curriculum including several critical care rotations prepares our graduates for a career
of excellence in emergency medicine. Fellows attend weekly emergency medicine conferences, and regularly contribute by presenting their own critical cases to the general audience. Fellow/ resident relationships are forged during several events such as the fall retreat, mid-winter wellness, advocacy day, and team building opportunities. The fellowship bid farewell to program director Ann Verhoeven, PA-C who stepped down after 12 years of leadership.
The fellowship enjoys immense support from core faculty who provide weekly lectures, a formalized ultrasound training program, monthly simulations, board review, and other core educational activities. Our simulation team provides monthly high-fidelity simulations that allow fellows to practice critical resuscitation and procedural skills.
Additional lectures and educational activities
are provided by subspecialists from across the hospital system. PEM faculty serve as mentors
for fellow research projects, with additional research support provided by the department
of Research and Sponsored Programs. The fellowship introduced tracks for those wishing for additional specialization of training. We currently have three fellows enrolled in our Ultrasound track. Fellows are encouraged attend local and national conferences and present their research to a wider audience.
Ms. Verhoeven created the Regions Hospital EM PA fellowship program in 2011, setting a national standard in the graduate medical education of physician assistants in emergency medicine.
Her legacy lives on in the exceptional care that is delivered each day by the 28 graduates of the program. Join us in welcoming Dan Texidor, PA-C as the new program director in 2023.
We are proud to announce the 2023 graduates of the Regions Hospital Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Fellowship program! Danielle Fearing, Tommie James, and Elissa Louks have all accepted positions and will be working at Regions Hospital in the emergency department.
