Chief residentsWelcome to Regions! Here in Saint Paul, our Hospital serves as a center for Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma, Heart, Stroke, and Regional Burn.Formerly Ramsey County, we serve a unique and diverse community of under-served and privatelyinsured patients, and we are a safety net hospital for our community. As a tertiary care center, our residents are exposed to a large volume of critically ill patients. We encourage early advanced responsibility to allow our residents to develop their clinical acumen, resuscitation skills, and procedural competencies over all three years of residency. This starts with day one of intern year. Our interns are empowered and expected to help manage our sickest patients from the beginning, and they lead all medical airways. Our off-service rotations prepare residents for the sickest patients and to manage patients in critical access facilities. We have a robust pediatric anesthesia rotation, where we perfect the management of airways in patients as young as a few weeks old. Through Pediatric, Surgical, Medical Intensive Care Unit rotations, we grow our critical acumen. Rotations in EMS, toxicology, and ortho make us a more wellrounded emergency medicine doctor. In the setting of a high acuity, high volume and critical care focused curriculum, we continue to emphasize wellness in our clinical rotations and outside of shift. Leadership here is constantly seeking resident feedback and actually incorporating this to improve our clinical experiences. Our latest improvements as of this year include a revamped pediatrics curriculum, including NICU and PICU experiences for our interns, promoting care and procedural competency for critically ill children, as well as an improved ICU schedule for our seniors, with an emphasis on autonomy while on shift and better worklife balance while off.We balance the schedule to make sense: grouping night shifts, protecting weekends when possible, and early release of schedules to make sure residents make it to important life events. The residency prioritizes streamlined documentation and a sign out culture that allows our residents to leave their shifts on time. Our wellness committee plans regular gatherings which promotes the already collegial and collaborative relationship amongst the ED staff. Our residents have a diverse set of interests, participating in numerous rec league sports, local festivals, sporting events and concerts. We love exploring our beautiful Minnesota outdoors, and volunteering in our community. In the Spring of each year our interns attend SAEM for education and bonding time with each other and many of our clinical staff. Every fall, the entire residency has protected time off for a fall retreat and winter activity. Our unique location, early autonomy, extensive critical care experience, with a curriculum that is resident-centered, combined with our experienced faculty and outstanding hospital culture, make the Regions Emergency Medicine Residency Program an amazing place to train.2024-2025Chief residents (left)Stella Duong, MD, Alayna Kabanuk, MD, and Rae Hohle, MDEmergency Medicine Residency 2024 Annual Report 7
