This award is only given to four educators nationwide each year.
Gary’s commitment to agricultural education didn’t stop at teaching. He ventured into farm business management, driven by a desire to contribute to the community and guide young farmers. Reflecting on his mentors, he credits individuals like Dr. Roland
Peterson and local instructors who played a pivotal role in his transition from high school teaching to full-time farm management instruction.
When asked about scholarships during his education, Gary recalls receiving one in the name of his late instructor, highlighting the impact it had on him.
This experience fuels his commitment to giving back, acknowledging the role the university played in shaping his enthusiasm for agriculture.
As Gary shares his insights, it becomes evident that his journey is not just a personal one; it’s a narrative of interconnected lives and shared values. He stresses the importance of a well-rounded agriculture education for students, emphasizing the versatility it offers in pursuing careers within the agricultural sector. Gary expresses his joy at having his granddaughter, Ella, an ACM junior at the University of Minnesota, continuing the family’s connection to the alma mater.
The Thome family story threads together passion, dedication, and family values. Their journey is not just about farming; it’s about nurturing a love for agriculture that transcends generations. Gary and Jane have seen the impact of agriculture and education on others’ lives. They are excited to support agriculture education students by funding an Undergraduate AECM Scholarship. We are so grateful for their generosity.
