INTEGRATIVE BIOLOGY & PHYSIOLOGY

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA MEDICAL SCHOOL INTEGRATIVE BIOLOGY & PHYSIOLOGY
We have lift off: Center for Inflammation Science is launched
The medical school launched the Center for Inflammation Sci- ence (CIS) this year serving as a great inflection point opportu- nity for the school as a whole, including advancing the upward trajectory of IBP. In this light, as ingrained in sports lore is the famous Herb Brooks quote: “Great moments are born from great opportunity.” With support of the medical school, IBP
has great plans for this opportunity, beginning with the search for a top scholar in the field to lead this initiative as the founding director.
CIS seeks mechanistic insights into the areas of sterile inflam- mation that remain a mystery, including the causes of acute and chronic inflammation that can lead to progressive, de- generative disease, such as obesity and diabetes, muscle and cardiovascular conditions, and many others across tissue and organs systems, and across multiple disciplines. Exceptional faculty candidates with established research programs in the
study of inflammation in health and disease, from an integrative molecular to sys- tems physiology perspective will be sought. Areas of particular interest include ster- ile inflammation and innate and adaptive immunology as related to the cardiovascu- lar system, muscle, metabolism, diabetes, obesity, stress and related fields. Along with the medical school, IBP
is directing significant effort
and resources that will enable
the new director to recruit
outstanding new faculty to
build the program. With past
successes as our guide, we
expect faculty growth to blos-
som and amplify, like concen-
tric waves in a pond, with new
faculty appointed across the
medical school departments.
