HEAD
To the UMN Mechanical Engineering Community,
INCOMING
It is with a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and,
I have to confess, a touch of nervousness, that I write
to you as incoming department head in mechanical engineering. I joined the University of Minnesota Mechanical Engineering Department in 2009; I have “grown-up” as an educator and researcher within
the ME Department and I truly love working here.
In the past 15 years I have had the opportunity to
teach fluid mechanics and heat transfer to nearly
1000 undergraduates, advised 25+ PhD students and postdoctoral associates, and served as the department’s director of graduate studies from 2015-2020.
Our department is at an important juncture, and I look forward to working with all of you in continuing to modernize and strengthen our curriculum as well as our teaching and reaching laboratory infrastructure, and in ensuring our department is welcoming to students, staff, and faculty from all walks of life. Our department will continue to pursue excellence in everything we do.
I also want to sincerely thank my colleague Professor Sue Mantell for leading our department for the past 5+ years. I have been lucky in my career in that both department heads I have had as a faculty member (Uwe Kortshagen and Sue Mantell) were both excellent. Sue in particular demonstrated a unique level of care about not only the quality of education and research within our department, but also the health, well- being, and success of every student, staff member, and faculty member in mechanical engineering. She has left big shoes to fill!
Sincerely,
Chris Hogan, Ph.D.
Carl and Janet Kuhrmeyer Chair Professor Associate Department Head
The first ME 3MT Competition in 2019, with Mantell on the far left and Hogan on the far right.
CONGRATULATIONS, PROFESSOR HOGAN!
