I still use her strategy of %u201cgames%u201d with the students and residents I teach today. She taught me to be an expert at noticing things about our patients and would always try to have me stump her with some small detail about a patient or family member. It really did teach me to be an expert at observation and noticing small non verbal cues. Today these skills really help me notice small signs of pathology and find quick and easy ways to connect with patients and their families.Alan Sazama (%u201817)It was a joy and a privilege to learn from Dr. Quaday while in residency. She is highly regarded as an excellent physician, leader, and person. Congratulations on your retirement! Kasey Sturm (%u201819)I learned so much from Dr Quaday over the years we worked together when I was a resident, fellow, and staff. From our neuro assessments to our bedside manner; she helped us all become better physicians and I%u2019m so thankful for that!! Best of luck with your retirement, Karen! Your shoes will be tough to fill!Kara Tomlinson (%u201811)KQ always challenged us to approach our evaluation and work up with attention to detail and a questioning attitude, considering the value of each test and if it changes the care of the patient. Her approach remains influential in my thought processes in independent practice. Thank you, Karen, for sharing your wisdom (and your chocolates)!Andrea Weiers (%u201820)There is so much to say about Karen. She is certainly the most intimidating colleague to sign out to because I know she will not tolerate mediocrity and she will always be asking the tough questions that I should have already considered. On the flip side, you will not meet a more empathetic person that KQ and this is seen every time she works %u2014 with colleagues, staff and patients.I have worked on a number of committees over the years with Karen and I always appreciated two things: 1. She always advocates for us in the ED and is always pressing others to consider the downstream effects of policy decisions. 2. She is always direct and as a result effective. With Karen, there are no wishy-washy answers to questions, there is no %u2018well, let%u2019s just see how it goes%u2019, there is no little task that will be allowed to just fall away undone. Karen%u2019s are big shoes that will be challenging to adequately fill in the years to come.Mike Zwankthank youEmergency Medicine Residency 2024 Annual Report 25
