Emergency Medicine Residency 2024 Annual Report 17We are fortunate to have you in our residency, what attracted you to come to Minnesota to train at Regions? My interview experience at Regions was so uplifting and heart-warming; I felt like part of the family from the beginning. Even virtually, it was clear how deeply the residents care for one another and genuinely love spending time together and I knew the residents, faculty, and staff at Regions were who I%u2019d want by my side during my highest highs and lowest lows of residency. I didn%u2019t think it could get any better than match day, but from the first day of orientation, my expectations of the people, training, and opportunities at Regions have been exceeded time and time again. You are passionate about Sexual and Reproductive Health initiatives. Tell us about some of the projects you have worked on or are working on in this area? This is a unique niche within Emergency Medicine and I am so grateful to have program leadership willing to connect me with anyone and everyone to help make my dreams a reality! Dr. Amy Dooley, the medical director for the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program, has taken me under her wing to help me carve out a resident role within this program so myself and future residents can learn how we as a healthcare system and country provide care to survivors of sexual assault. Myself and Dr. Kelly Barringer have been collaborating with our Ob/Gyn colleagues to make contraception more accessible to patients in the Emergency Department. We are currently working on a survey to identify barriers providers experience to discussing and providing contraception to their patients. Additionally, the program funded my enrollment in an Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) course where I learned in depth how to manage breech deliveries and shoulder dystocia, cardiac arrest in pregnancy, and so much more. Although still in the works, I am hoping to spend my elective time with a sexual and reproductive healthcare clinic to get more experience with contraceptive counseling, managing early pregnancy loss, and caring for patients experiencing unintended pregnancy.Share with us your future career plans, and why you chose that path?Regions has prepared me to be a leader within Emergency Medicine and I am excited to continue growing as a physician, leader, and teacher as a Medical Education, Technology, and Innovation Fellow at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Nothing brings me more joy than mentoring others and helping those around me achieve their goals, so I have pretty much always known I%u2019d pursue Medical Education. It has been a privilege as a senior resident to play even a small role in teaching medical students as well as first- and second-year residents; this responsibility is something I do not take lightly and I am excited to learn to do so effectively with dedicated time during fellowship.Resident spotlightSamantha Cox, MD Emergency Medicine Residency 2024 Annual Report 17
