Emergency Medicine Residency 2024 Annual Report 31The Regions Hospital Emergency Medicine Department has a long tradition of educating medical students. We had a total of 71 medical students rotate through the Regions ED during the 2023-24 academic year. We were fortunate to have a full complement of medical students, maintaining a robust roster of talented EMbound students from the University of Minnesota and from medical schools throughout the US. The year culminated with a very successful residency match where 10 of the 11 students who matched into the Regions Hospital EM Residency Class of 2027 came through our student program.Medical student rotations include: The core required EM clerkship for University of Minnesota Medical Students and an advanced subinternship level EM clerkship for EM-bound students. We also offer bedside ultrasound and toxicology clerkships. Students rotating through Regions ED participate in workshops in orthopedics, eye, simulation and toxicology and attend didactic sessions alongside the EM residents and faculty. During their clinical shifts they evaluate the undifferentiated patient, formulate differential diagnoses and plans and perform basic EM procedures. They have the opportunity to participate in trauma team activations, code blue resuscitations and are able to evaluate patients across the entire spectrum of acuity.Every year there are also 6 REACH students who complete all of their 3rd year clerkships at Regions (except pediatrics). The REACH LIC %u2013 Regions Equitable Affordable Community Health Program was started in 2018. These students also rotate through the Regions ED.Every year at Residency Graduation the Kevin P. Kilgore, MD award is given to the top medical student educators amongst the faculty. This year%u2019s recipients were Drs.Teri Gunnarson, Keith Henry, Brad Hernandez, and Emily Wagner. Dr. Kilgore was a medical student leader for decades and a talented educator who left an indelible legacy on the medical student program. The Star Award (Outstanding Resident Educator for Medical Students) was awarded to Drs. Heather Kaluzniak and Octavia Ruelas. We are fortunate to have an incredible group of compassionate teachers who provide world class education to our medical students!Medical Student Program
